Serving on boards can be a valuable adjunct to one’s legal career, employing your analytical and reasoning skills differently and, in the case of nonprofits, an opportunity to give back to the community. The importance of corporate governance has grown substantially over the years, especially since the Enron era, and its potential to enhance company value and reduce risk has become more widely recognized. Board service can be a worthwhile source of networking for lawyers, subject to rules against solicitation. There are important ethical issues to be considered, but they are easily navigable with careful attention.
